讲座摘要：

Action verbs provide a privileged domain for investigating how languages categorize human experience. Action verb meaning emerges from the interaction between embodied experience, conceptual construal, and language-specific lexical organization. Action concepts and verbal meanings cannot be treated as equivalent: a single verb may refer to different action types, while the same event may be referred through several lexical alternatives.

This talk presents research developed within IMAGACT, a multilingual ontology that visually represented actions linked to the verbs used to identify them in different languages. This framework makes it possible to compare event categorization across languages without assuming one-to-one translation equivalence. We will focus on breaking events and on cross-linguistic differences in various semantic components (manner, result, goal, participant structure). Applications on abstract and metaphorical domains will be also discussed, as well as machine-learning techniques applied to multilingual lexical distributions, which have provided a means of identifying clusters of conceptually related actions.
